The legacy of the Romans and of those eventful times implies a strong commitment: barely 2,000 years ago the Roman Limes - since 2005 a designated UNESCO world heritage site - ran north-west to south-east through today's Nature Park. Close to the Limes, at its back, civil settlements were built. Nowadays archaeological sites, buildings and documentation are a witness to hundreds of years of Roman military and cultural rule over this region. This ancient world coming back to life never fails to fascinate visitors.

In the local castell Biriciana – whose northern gate has been accurately rebuild – behind the Limes a cavalry unit of 500 man from Spain was stationed. Here the largest Roman baths in Bavaria were discovered, as well as a precious Roman treasure which is now to be seen in the local Roman museum. In the museum also the Bavarian Limes Information Centre (Zentrales Bayerisches Limesinformationszentrum) can be visited.

The castle is home both to the Römer und Bajuwaren Museum, dedicated to the Romans and the early Bavarian people, and to the Information Point Limes. The "Infopoint Limes" presents Roman sites and the Limes in the Altmühltal Nature Park. The completely furnished watchtower's guardroom is a true highlight.
