The Donaudurchbruch rock gorge between Kelheim and the Kloster Weltenburg monastery was first acknowledged as a natural monument by King Ludwig I in 1840. On 5th March 1978 the "Weltenburger Enge" nature reserve received the European Award. This spectacular rock gorge is sided by walls up to 80 metres (260 feet) high, with many small caves.

Its church built by the Asam brothers is a true masterpiece of Baroque art and architecture, admired every year by visitors from all over the world. In front of the church there is one of the most beautiful Bavarian "Biergärten" - one of the specialities served in this beer garden shadowed by old chestnut trees is the famous beer produced on site by the monks, in the oldest monastery brewery in the world.

The impressive circular monument built on the Michelsberg hill by King Ludwig I to commemorate the end of the liberation wars against Napoleon (1813-1815). The building was commissioned to the famous architect Leo von Klenze from Munich. Inside it features 34 statues of the goddesses of victory, made of white Carrara marble; outside it offers a spectacular view of the surroundings from the gallery.
